Rune Divination Practise

September 23, 2016

Today’s rune is A – Ansuz – “Mouth, breath, speech, God (esp Odin)”, I was ready for a day of communication.

Next weekend I’m making a long trek up to an off-grid community on Scoraig for a week-long course on kiln building, smelting and casting in bronze, just like the Ancients; but with the advantage of brand new materials and tech.

Today was all about calling to book a rental car, phoning around to find a bed for the night beforehand – there just happened to be a music festival on the same weekend and every B&B was booked up… I was eventually given the number of an old lady with a room to spare – and giving the ferryman a ring to check that there was space on the 6pm boat across the sea loch.

So… speech and communication.

Today’s rune is G – Gebo – “gift”. Symbolising all gifts, giving, and balancing of energies. As Odin said in the Hávamál: “Better not to ask than to overpledge, for a gift demands a gift in return”. In fact, the Hávamál  has much to say about gifts and gifting.

Today’s rune is H – Hagalaz  -“hail”: The sudden, unavoidable wrath of a hailstorm. Blight of crops, destruction of all that you have made.

As I posted below, I’m using Freya Aswynn’s “Runes of Yggdrasil” cards to do these daily rune readings. I drew last night for today and, for the first time, the card flipped.

Runes of Yggdrasil: Rune Cards

As you’ve probably noticed, I’ve been doing a “rune-a-day” divination practise – selecting a single rune to advise me of the tone or events of the day ahead. Choosing a single rune makes it easier to see how that particular rune manifests or defines  things.

The divination practise continues, today’s rune being O – Othila – “inherited land”. Walking the dogs with my wife, they split and went separate ways; I followed one as she stayed with the other pair. Our paths diverged, then drew back together and crossed, describing a perfect Othila on the meadow. This reminded me how the O rune also represents the Va or “sacred enclosure”- defined by a rope or somesuch, the entrance being where the line crosses itself: the person inside the Va must open the way.

Today I drew Berkana… again. After the other day, I knew that this was pointing toward nurturing and “maternal” parenting – since my eldest son was away at a friend’s place and my wife was at an away match/tournament, I knew this was referring to how I parent my youngest son; just turned 8 years old.

For reasons I’ll not go into right now, I have been irritable, irascible and easily angered of late. Poor kid caught the brunt of this a few times and got properly yelled at in a totally non-berkana way. I realised that I needed to drop the Patriarchal Mode and Laying Down the Law in favour of a softer, more nurturing aspect

See… to me, there are clearly layers to a single rune reading: not only does it tell you what to expect, it also clues you in to what is expected of you… the riddle and the solution are one and the same.

So, we get to the afternoon and I have a massive flip-out over a tech issue he hasn’t even caused and I realise I need to Berkana it up a bit. Since he was watching episodes of The Croods cartoon on Netflix, I ask if he’d like to watch the actual film… I said we could get it if he wanted (yeah, shamefaced overcompensation). Naturally he did, so we got it and put it on the Big TV.

All I can say is that it was a huge Nudge-Wink-Lol… I totally identified with the Caveman Dad, saw the ANGRYME as this cartoon exaggeration… I’m not going to spoil the film, suffice it to say that it was very cathartic. I understand that it’s not impossible to change, just that – right now – it’s gonna take a bit of vigilance.

But, hey… that’s why I’m drawing the runes, no? To put myself at one with the cosmic flow.

Trying to get back into runic divination, I drew a rune last night to represent the tone of today and got R – Raidho – Rad – “riding/journeys” inverted… wondering if inverted means “in a bad way” or just “not quite manifested”…

I figured that one out after spending nearly 3 hours stuck in gridlocked traffic, spiralling out to grip the whole city from its epicentre where a double-decker bus had smooshed a scooter and rider. I was on the scene of the accident just minutes after it happened, just as the first police car started shutting the road in both directions.

I was surprised to get such a visceral, in-ya-face event. I was in the last few people to see the carnage before the cops closed the road. Right time in the wrongest place.

3 hours for what should have taken 20 minutes and a hideous RTA. I now know what “inverted Raidho” means: NO to your Journey, and also bad tidings for the Rider.

Note: I had already drawn another rune: upright B – Berkana – “birch, birth, nurturing/motherhood”, but had *that feeling* that I needed to draw another (which was the doozy). I later realised that Berkana was also accurate, since I had spent a lot of time over the day comforting my wife, who was battling with horrible bouts of deep depression and weeping. Berkana points to her as the maternal – mother of our children – but also to the nurturing, comforting aspect of looking after her.

Wow. Spot on.

Hey Widow… It was fun chatting with you after the bout, but I can’t help feeling we got cut short before we’d really scratched the surface. There’s so much more to say.

Because these staves are not just inert shapes, and when you inscribe them onto you, you become theirs – long before you can truly say that *they* are *yours*.

Know you how to cut them? How to colour them? To test them? To send them?

More than a simple adornment, each embodies an energy, a process, an entity – and not all of them will share a table.

Are you prepared to speak *to* them? Speak *for* them? To do as they bid at any hour of the day or night?

I dedicated myself to them long before I etched them onto my skin… By then they were already bone-deep in my being. They pulsed in my marrow, stole my sanity, whittled away my friends until only the longest suffering stayed by me. I can count them on one hand with digits to spare.

I carved my oath upon my heart in a shitty hotel room in Paddington, with its shagged-out bed and full-width mirror. Totally alone.

All this years before I earned the right to bear their marks.

Tread carefully, know what you are asking for before you offer your self, your soul and your sanity.
